'그 어디에도 거하지 않기에 그 모든 곳에 거하는'

김하연 - 끊임없이 변주되는 시각적 존재.

지난 4월이었다. "순수한 여정의 시작"이었다는 작가 김하연(Hayen Kim)의 고백과 마주했던 것이. 동시대 순수미술가라 칭하는 그녀는 '그 어디에도 거하지 않기에 그 모든 곳에 거하는(Belonging Nowhere, Belonging Everywhere)'이라는 다소 무거운 전시 주제를 선보였다. 고향인 부산을 떠나 오랜 기간 미국, 프랑스, 네덜란드에서 미술을 공부하며, 늘상 되뇌이던 '나는 누구인가'를 자신만의 시각적 언어로 표현했다. 그 어디에도 매여있지 않고, 색과 모양을 바꾸어나가며, 멈추지 않고 계속해서 움직이는 '구름'을 통해. 전시장 벽면 한 켠, '형태에 매이지 않은 유영의 언어, 끊임없이 변주되는 시각적 존재' 앞에 그녀는 서 있었다. - 강경호 (현대미술가, 현대개념미술가)

It was last April. I came face to face with the confession of artist Hayen Kim, who called it “the beginning of a pure journey.” Describing herself as a contemporary fine artist, she presented a rather weighty exhibition theme: Belonging Nowhere, Belonging Everywhere. Having left her hometown of Busan, she studied art for many years in the United States, France, and the Netherlands, constantly repeating the question, “Who am I?”—a question she expressed through her own visual language. Not bound to any one place, she used the ever-changing, unceasingly moving “cloud” to represent her identity—shifting in color and form, never still. On one side of the exhibition wall, in front of “a language of drifting unbound by form, a visual existence in constant variation,” she stood. 지난 4월, 부산의 한 전시장에서 만난 김하연(Hayen Kim) 작가의 작품은 시각적 경험과 함께 존재에 대한 철학적 사유의 탐색이었다. ‘그 어디에도 거하지 않기에 그 모든 곳에 거하는’이라는 전시 제목은 그녀의 삶과 예술을 관통하는 질문—‘나는 누구인가’—에 대한 응답처럼 느껴졌다.

김하연 작가는 한국을 떠나 미국, 프랑스, 네덜란드에서 미술을 공부하며, 고정되지 않은 시각 언어를 구축해왔다. 그녀의 작품은 형태에 얽매이지 않고, 경계와 정체성의 유동성을 표현한다. 특히 ‘구름’이라는 상징을 통해 끊임없이 변화하는 형태와 질감을 시각화하며, 관람자에게 존재의 본질을 되묻는 거울을 제공한다.

그녀의 작업은 들뢰즈(Gilles Deleuze, 1925-1995)와 가타리(Félix Guattari, 1930-1992)의 철학, 특히 되기(becoming)와 탈영토화(deterritorialization) 개념을 떠올리게 한다. 김하연의 예술은 재현이 아니라, 끊임없이 변화하고 흐르는 존재 그 자체다. 관람자에게 고정된 정체성의 개념이 아닌, 유동적이고 다층적인 과정으로 바라보게 만든다.

나는 작가에게 "전시장 벽면 한 켠 ‘형태에 매이지 않은 유영의 언어, 끊임없이 변주되는 시각적 존재’ 앞에 서 보세요."라고 말했다. 그녀의 작업은 나에게 ‘나는 누구인가’라는 질문을 다시 던지며, 존재의 경계를 다시 그려보게 했다.

김하연 작가의 예술은 보는 것과 함께 사유하고 경험하는 예술이다. 부산에서의 이번 전시는 시각적 표현과 철학적 대화의 공간으로, 동시대 개념미술이 지닌 힘과 깊이를 생각하게 했다. 그녀의 작품은 예술이란 무엇인가, 존재란 무엇인가에 대한 근본적인 질문을 던지는 사유의 공간이었다.

'작위적인 사회적 직위, 학연과 지연으로 예술을 망치는 명성'에 물들지 않고, 지금처럼 자신의 작품세계를 창조해가는 작가 김하연이 되기를 기대한다.

Last April, at an exhibition hall in Busan, I encountered the works of artist Hayen Kim—a visual experience intertwined with a philosophical exploration of existence. The exhibition title, Belonging Nowhere, Belonging Everywhere, felt like a response to the question that permeates her life and art: “Who am I?”

Hayen Kim, having left Korea to study art in the United States, France, and the Netherlands, has built a visual language that resists fixation. Her work expresses the fluidity of boundaries and identity, unconstrained by form. Through the symbol of the “cloud,” she visualizes ever-changing shapes and textures, offering viewers a mirror that reflects the essence of being.

Her work evokes the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995) and Félix Guattari (1930–1992), particularly the concepts of becoming and deterritorialization. Hayen Kim’s art is not about representation, but about existence itself—constantly changing and flowing. It invites viewers to see identity not as a fixed notion, but as a fluid and multilayered process.

"I said to the artist, ‘Stand before the corner of the exhibition wall, in front of the “language of drifting unbound by form, a visually shifting presence in constant variation.”’ Her work made me ask again, ‘Who am I?’ and redrew the boundaries of existence."

Hayen Kim’s art is not merely to be seen—it is to be contemplated and experienced. This exhibition in Busan served as a space for visual expression and philosophical dialogue, reminding me of the power and depth of contemporary conceptual art. Her work offered a space for reflection on the fundamental questions: What is art? What is existence?

I hope that Hayen Kim continues to create her artistic world without being tainted by “the artificial prestige of social status, academic or regional ties that ruin art.”
